JCPenney has been so on-point this season.
I am thankful every day that role that came to me was Emily Fields. She’s a wonderful character, and I love playing her — but she’s also an important character. Things are changing. The world is finally understanding that love between two people, no matter their gender, is just love. And Emily is a part of that. She’s a sweet character, a fun character, and she’s a character who has found empowerment through embracing the fact that she’s a girl who likes girls. I am so proud to play her. It’s like the universe worked its magic and brought her to me.
While Kurt’s coming out to his father was a tender moment and reflected the best possible outcome, Santana’s forced outing was just as real and Rivera played the scenes with the perfect blend of anger, hurt and fear one would expect when such a personal decision is no longer yours to control.
| me: | so i just found out a guy i dated in high school is getting married. he was "hardcore", had gauged ears, and sold drugs. sure knew how to pick 'em, didn't i? |
| charlie: | haha, "lesbian". |
So often on television the lesbian plotline goes the way of objectification, but not on Glee. Rather, this week, we got to see a show follow through and show a confused young girl not turning her lesbianism into a punchline. What a remarkably refreshing concept!
Much credit must be given to the producers, who I have at times attacked for their seemingly calculated representations of diversity on the show, for developing the character of Santana perfectly…. As much as Kurt’s (Chris Colfer) journey was deemed so lovely and applauded, it is Santana who is truly fascinating. Here is a young gay character who is hiding, but at the same time not the outcast. She is actually able to control her image on some superficial level, while still grappling with her hidden emotions.
yeah yeah this recap is from like, a month ago, but it’s just so wonderful that someone on a prime time tv show rises to fame because of their character’s sexuality, when just a few years ago it could have been seen as a career-killer. santana was cast as a secondary character, but [lesbian] fans clamored for more from her character, and now naya’s getting a fucking solo album.
